ONE out of every 100 lawyers in the city are participating in the city's political system as delegates to the city or district-level People's Congress or members of a political advisory body.
That is one of the highest levels of political participation for lawyers anywhere in the country, the Shanghai Bar Association said yesterday.
Last year, the 104 lawyers involved in local politics issued more than 60 bills and proposals to the People's Congress and People's Political Consultative Conference, covering city construction, environmental protection, justice, culture, health and the economy.
A bill put forward by lawyer Qian Liping covering e-commerce has been included in this year's legislative agenda for the Shanghai People's Congress.
"As trained legal professionals, lawyer can effectively enhance the quality of legislation and political suggestions," said Lu Hongbin, chief of the Shanghai Bar Association. "In order to play a more influential role in these political bodies, lawyers are participating in special lectures offered by our association to improve their political skills."
